Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jawad was the ninth of the Twelve Imams after his father Ali al-Ridha and before his son Ali al-Hadi. He was known as al-Jawād and al-Taqī, but also called Abu Jaʿfar al-Ṯāni, and Ibn al-Ridha. His mother, Sabika, was a slave girl from Nubia from the family of Maria al-Qibtiyya, who was the slave mother of Muhammad’s young son Ibrahim.
